With the opening of beauty salons and parlours, there is so much excitement in the ‘h’air. Finally, the selfies can be taken without adding the black to the grey!! Our eyebrows need not look like a jacco brow any longer! Thank heavens!
Women specifically, thronged to their favourite hangout’s with their favourite men, their barber, I mean. ? Have taken the liberty of mentioning men here coz as per the statistics, 74% of hair is treated, dyed and cut by men in India.
The neighbourhood salon was abuzz and it was impossible to contain my curiosity as I saw their professionals in white personal protective gear, with the face shield, gloves et all. It looked as though there was a sci-fi film shoot going on. The music was in a low tempo, the staff was immersed in providing the regular services of a manicure, pedicure, hair colour etc. It almost seemed as though we had transported into an unknown planet. Almost seemed!
The beauty of it all was inspite of the seating being in alternates, that space didn’t deter the ladies from having their incessant gossiping session. It had been weeks since Mrs Verma hadn’t seen Mrs Sinha. Both women had designer paisley masks on them. Now, society gossip is incomplete with THE society look, right!!
It had been a while since Mrs. Rajalakshmi hadn’t spoken to Mrs. Deshmukh. There was so much information to share.. Corona was old news!! Sunaina’s dog made out with a stray, Gauri broke up with her fiancé, Chaya self proclaimed herself as a godwoman! It was actually hilarious to hear them talk to each other and laugh as the barber whisked his scissors over their split ends..
Just a fortnight prior, when the booze shops were “allowed” to open, India crossed a whopping 300 Crores on sales on day 1. Somebody had to refill the GOI coffers!! The sun, the lines, the social distancing.. nothing came in the way of quenching our thirst – for knowledge or for conversation.
No matter how tough life gets, what I love most is that the spirit of India can never be diminished… Corona or not.
