To call ourselves citizens of the Globe and then refer to the grandeur of the planet with reference to just a few countries is being partied to gross ignorance, is it not?
In the recent wake of the pandemic, as the numbers surge, which countries are we really concerned about? India, because we live here and of course the USA, Australia, London, Singapore.. some of the “cool countries” so to speak. It sure brings back the adolescent years of groups in schools wherein every batch had a “cool gang” that people wanted to be a part of. Every activity or journal revolved around their words and moments.
And today, aren’t we all guilty of the same thing? What did you really know of Beirut before the explosion took place? Did you know that it was the capital of Lebanon? Did you know that it has absolutely no preparedness for disaster? Are you aware that the 6 million population of the eastern Mediterranean country has been grappling under the worst economic crisis, that has only gotten heightened after the Coronavirus hit?
The massive explosion that shook Beirut could have been due to neglected ammunition in a warehouse or could be staged. The investigation is still on. Meanwhile, it is a feeling of helplessness as we sit back and read about the challenges, that the people of that country are facing due to ill-equipped medical aid. Can we not empower the ones that need it?
This is the year of deep introspection – to ourselves and to the world around us. As beings of the planet, it is imperative to broaden our myopic vision and look at the world in totality. We are bound as one in negativity under the unprecedented crisis that still looms precariously over our heads. Just imagine the scope of possibility we can achieve, had we been engulfed as one in positivity!!
From this week on, Random Conversations will focus on the Countries that actually and physically, are at the center of our globe. Let’s get together and be global citizens!
